Advanced Topics in Authority Work and Authority Records (SEFLIN) (SWFLN)

This two-hour live online class reviews the purpose of authority work and authority records and the basic structure of the MARC authority record.

This two-hour live online class builds upon LYRASIS’s “Basics of Authority Work and Authority Records” with a more in-depth look at the MARC authority record for names, subjects, and titles, discussing fields beyond those for the authorized entry and references, as well as fixed field coding. We’ll look at the OCLC MARC authority record, and current practices within the U.S. library community with respect to authority control and authority work will be discussed. Time will be available for concerns and questions about bibliographic database “cleanup” and ongoing authority control in the catalog.

The rules formulating headings for personal names, corporate names, geographic names, subjects and titles will not be addressed in depth in this class.

Practice and readings may be provided for participants to complete on their own.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the class, students will:

•Have a broader knowledge of the MARC authority record
•Be familiar with the leader and fixed field in a MARC authority record
•Understand the role of the Library of Congress and NACO (the Name Authority Cooperative) in authority control processes in the U.S. and internationally

As a LYRASIS Educational Services Librarian, Linda provides pragmatic training on cataloging standards and practices, including The Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed., and the MARC formats. She also keeps library technical services staff aware of new developments in the field, such as non-MARC metadata standards and changes in cataloging standards and routines. She believes strongly in the value of bibliographic control in providing improved access to library and information resources and enjoys helping library staff improve their skills and increase their confidence in that area.
