SUMMARY:5 Star Customer Service
DESCRIPTION:An announcement that there’s a new\, mandatory Customer Service Training coming would most likely be met with groans and comments like\, “We don’t need any more training! We already give great customer service!” And that’s probably true. Still\, in these days of high competition and even higher expectations\, great isn’t good enough anymore. Today’s library staff members need to offer the greatest customer service\, which means connecting with and in the community\, surprising users by meeting needs they didn’t even know they had and building relationships both real and virtual. This session will offer suggestions on just how to make that move from great….to greatest! \nSpeaker: Catherine Hakala-Ausperk

SUMMARY:The State of Social Media: Trends & Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Social media for a library is no longer a novelty; it’s part of how most modern-day libraries operate. However\, social media as a platform has changed…a lot! It’s not the same as it was ten\, five\, or even one year ago. And it’s not just user demographics that have changed…how and why people use it (or perhaps don’t) have also evolved\, and perhaps in some unexpected ways. In an environment that seems to be changing every moment\, join social media author Laura Solomon for an in-depth look at what’s happening now with social media and the challenges libraries have going forward. \nSpeaker: Laura Solomon

SUMMARY:Non-Profiteers Unite!
DESCRIPTION:Chambers of Commerce have it all figured out when it comes to collaborating and promoting business.\nEach community Chamber has a structure\, membership\, a strategic plan all to support for-profit interests. They have a goal\, a presence in the community and a network of contacts that mutually support each other. So why not non-profits? Why can’t there be a community-wide organization for non-profiteers instead of the traditional silo approaches? \n\nThis presentation will provide a roadmap to:\nIdentifying fellow non-profits in your community\nHow to gather and collaborate with each other\nDetermining community-wide goals\nHow to implement them\nHow to sustain and further develop this community engagement initiative.\n\nThe nonprofits’ role in the community is as important as the profits; however\, many times it is difficult to go it alone. Whether it is due to budgets\, personnel\, infrastructure or political climate\, an organizational approach will have strength in numbers providing greater resources mutually shared by all. Non-Profiteers unite! This is your time! \nSpeaker: Gene Coppola

SUMMARY:Fostering Collaboration and Innovation in Library Makerspaces
DESCRIPTION:Born after a fire and during a pandemic\, the Sunderland Foundation Innovation Lab marks its third anniversary this summer. We celebrate each day as an opportunity to inspire creativity\, facilitate learning\, and spark joy among our campus and community visitors. Planning for a two-story lab in the main library began years before our slow opening; some spaces remain under construction. \nIn this session we’ll describe decision-making for innovation spaces and talk about how community involvement shapes our offerings. Our innovation lab has spaces designed to promote academic innovation and community engagement. Equipment and tools are selected based on community need\, equity\, and accessibility. Join us in a conversation about the future of communal innovation spaces and their role in libraries. \nSpeakers: Jeff Sheldon and Carol Sevin\, K-State Libraries

SUMMARY:Making AI Work for You
DESCRIPTION:As AI continues to evolve\, there are more and more opportunities to use it within your environments and everyday work life. In fact\, you probably have been using some form of AI over the last 10 years. This session is focused on highlighting some key products that allow a very “turnkey” approach to AI — whether that’s firing up chatbots\, looking at your data to analyze and automate\, or even AI to help you become a more efficient library leader. Brian Pichman of the Evolve Project will share some his favorite tools to not only increase productivity but harness AI in a responsible and ethical way. \nSpeaker: Brian Pichman

SUMMARY:When—and How—To Level Up Your Marketing
DESCRIPTION:Lots of libraries realize their marketing isn’t exactly razor-sharp … but in a nonprofit world where budgets are tight\, they’re not sure what to do about it. In this session\, the team from Low Octave Brand Foundations will lay out a framework libraries can use to evaluate their existing marketing and then craft a strategy to push it forward—on any budget. We’ll also help you think through what to take on with an in-house team; when it makes sense to partner with an external agency; and how to approach an external project in a way that ensures success and makes financial sense. \nSpeaker: Low Octave Brand Foundations\nNathan McDonald\, Aaron Johnson\, and Steve Hendershot \nSteve is a content marketing expert\, multimedia journalist and bestselling author who works with innovative brands including Adobe\, Qualtrics and Staples. In 2022 alone\, he was honored with two Content Marketing Awards from the Content Marketing Institute; a Peter J. Lisagor Award for excellence in Chicago journalism; and an award from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts for the top-rated podcast he hosts on behalf of the Project Management Institute. \nAaron crafts distinctive brand identities for a broad range of organizations\, from municipalities and universities to pizzerias and Harley-Davidson dealerships. He has served as creative director at multiple branding agencies\, and also was art director of industry-leading insurer State Farm. He excels at distilling a company’s ethos and product focus into a single\, cohesive idea\, expressed visually in a meaningful\, memorable brand identity. \nNathan is a strategy specialist and graphic designer\, as well as a Certified StoryBrand Guide. In the latter role\, he translates organizational opportunities and challenges into a compelling\, narrative sales strategy\, drawing on the StoryBrand framework as well as his extensive experience as an in-house creative director in both commercial and nonprofit settings. He serves as our workshop facilitator and project manager\, and also deploys his skills as a visual storyteller to help craft your brand’s new or reimagined visual identity and website.

SUMMARY:Convincing Communities to Collaborate With Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Every library wants to provide high-quality customer service and great user experiences. So who exactly is responsible for that? Frontline staff who interact with the public\, right? Perhaps IT folks who manage website functionality? Maybe administrators who set policies? What about security guards who make first contact? Tech services workers who stick spine labels on books? Believe it or not\, the answer is all of the above—plus everyone else you can think of. \nThis session will open your eyes to the myriad ways that library customers (and potential users) assess your organization every day. Looking through the lens of “brand touchpoints\,” you’ll learn how every employee\, and every space\, and every item that’s related to your library affects public perception. And if you want to be seen as a community anchor\, you can strategically work toward that by getting all hands on deck. \nCommunications consultant Kathy Dempsey will share real examples of how laypeople see and discuss libraries\, and will offer guidelines on how to be a positive touchpoint. This session is meant to inspire listeners to strive toward their best work and prove to locals that libraries are worthy community partners. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nRealizing that every employee at any level affects the public’s perception of the library.\nUnderstanding how each person can work toward improving public perception to help their library be recognized as a vital community anchor and a force for the public good.\n\nKathy Dempsey \nKathy Dempsey wrote the popular how-to book The Accidental Library Marketer and founded her own marketing consultancy\, Libraries Are Essential. Her work is dedicated to helping librarians and information professionals promote their value and expertise in order to gain respect and funding. \nKathy has been the Editor of Marketing Library Services newsletter for 30 years. In 2015\, she founded the Library Marketing and Communications Conference\, and chaired the show’s first 3 years. She’s a longtime member of the New Jersey Library Association\, and recently finished serving a 3-year term on the Executive Board of LibraryLinkNJ\, a statewide co-op. \nThis writer\, editor\, and marketing maven likes to sprinkle her presentations with humor to make marketing concepts more interesting and accessible. She continues to fight the stereotypes that librarians are boring and that “marketing” is a dirty word.
