Ever hear a boy say “I hate to read”? There’s a reason for that. This is an interactive ½ day workshop on reluctant readers, challenging stereotypes associated with boys and reading and sharing successful strategies for inspiring boys to read. We’ll explore the latest research on boys and reading including why it’s important for boys to read, look at a variety of programming options and formats (it doesn’t always have to be a book!), and examine how to modify a reader’s advisory interview with boys. I’ll share an often overlooked key ingredient for inspiring boys to read, and you’ll start creating a plan to get your whole community involved in getting boys to become readers for life.
This information would work well as part of next year’s summer reading program.
Audience: Public and school librarians, teachers
