Digital Reference as a mode of delivering reference services is well on its way to becoming an established practice in all types of libraries. This workshop will cover a brief background of digital reference and its arrival in the library environment, discuss the suitability of this type of technology for reference service (recognizing the possibility that it is not useful in all contexts), instruct and practice providing a proper “chat reference interview”, and examine the many challenges associated with the digital mode of providing reference services. This workshop will include practical, hands-on exercises and a review of electronic resources. Tips for sharpening reference skills in critical research and analysis will be provided.
