Using WorldCat on the Web: (SEFLIN) (SWFLN)

In this two-hour live online class, attendees will learn the features and functionality of

69,000 libraries world wide have contributed over 100 million records to the WorldCat database. All that information is wonderful—if you have access—but casual web users did not.

Until now.

OCLC introduces two initiatives to better expose library collections on the web— and the open WorldCat project (now via partner sites). These efforts have integrated library holdings into the web browsing experience, and opened new pathways for users into our catalogs, collections, and libraries.

Popular social networking features are also available. In, users can create an online identity, develop and share lists, build a bibliography (in one of several formats), and use popular social bookmarking tools to share information.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this class, you will be able to:

•Understand the requirements for contributing your library holdings for web scale discovery in WorldCat
•Create a account
•Search the database
•Find WorldCat records while searching partner sites (Google, Yahoo, Amazon)
•Download tools (search box, toolbars, plug-ins) to increase efficiency and ease of use
•Utilize the social networking/boookmarking tools in the platform, including Facebook integration and resource lists in
•Create lists of books to share with other users
•Create a bibliography in an appropriate format (APA, MLA, etc.)
•Understand WorldCat Local and the next generation catalog

Jennifer joined LYRASIS in 1999 as a preservation microfilm specialist. She has held several positions within LYRASIS’ Member Services department ranging from the database services coordinator to Support Supervisor. She now is a member of the Professional Development team as a Professional Development Librarian specializing in technology, cataloging and metadata instruction. She earned her M.L.I.S. from Florida State University.
